Black Friday Vitamin Sales Worth Shopping, From a Doctor

The supplements aisle contains a dizzying amount of products. (Valerian root? Horny goat weed?) Come Black Friday, you’ll be able to shop plenty of these dietary supplements at a major price cut. To help you sort through what’s worth your dollars—and what simply is not—I consulted Matthew Kohler, MD, and Rajivan Maniam, MD, functional medicine doctors and co-founders of Ospina Medical in New York City.

Despite the countless options on the shelf, Dr. Kohler and Dr. Maniam say the average person really only needs to consider five supplements. As always, you should consult your own doctor before adding new supplements to your diet.

The vitamins and supplements to buy on Black Friday

1. Vitamin D

“Vitamin D, the ‘sunshine vitamin,’ has long been pinned as one of the most common vitamin deficiencies that many of us suffer from,” says Dr. Maniam. “While seemingly benign, deficiency in Vitamin D may in fact be propagating pain. To date, there are several observational studies showing an association between vitamin D deficiency and different pain conditions including low back pain, menstrual cramps, and chronic pain.” Dr. Maniam adds that taking vitamin D supplements has the possibility of offering many positives with no known negative side effects, so hey, it’s worth a shot!

2. Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is like catnip for the brain—and Dr. Kohler recommends it for anyone who wants some extra cognitive sharpness. “Vitamin B12 is essential for many biological functions and offers numerous known benefits including energy production and assisting in more efficient cellular reproduction,” he says.  B12 is also credited with improving your mood, supporting fetal development, and improving memory—so yeah, it’s worth adding to your medicine cabinet with your doc’s okay.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C may be best known for its immune system-boosting abilities, but Dr. Kohler recommends it for another reason. “Vitamin C is a critical nutrient for patients with pain or recent injuries—not only for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pain-relieving abilities but also for its role in tissue repair and regeneration,” says Dr. Kohler. “Vitamin C helps accelerate the healing process and protects the body from free radical damage. This becomes especially important in patients who have sports injuries such as tendonitis or ligament sprains.” Athletes, this supplement’s for you.

4. Vitamin K

“Vitamin K works as an enzyme cofactor that has been implicated in inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and osteoarthritis,” says Dr. Maniam. “Inflammation is recognized as a crucial component of many chronic aging diseases and evidence suggests vitamin K has an anti-inflammatory action.”

Are electric toothbrushes really worth the hype? This is what a dentist has to say

We are all aware of the importance of brushing our teeth since childhood. It is the basic foundation of maintaining good oral health and hygiene. But as we grow up, we tend to hastily brush our teeth, while doing other chores. This makes the efficacy really low, leaving you prone to dental cavities, decay or other issues.

So, what do you do? Although you can surely brush your teeth more mindfully using a manual toothbrush, if you are unable to do so, then consider switching to an electric toothbrush!

When we asked Dr Yatharth Bhatia, consultant, dental sciences at Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, he said, “The technology is evolving day by day, making the work easier and more efficient. The automation provided by the electric toothbrush can help brush your teeth properly with various movement techniques that it offers.”

He further explains, “While the efficiency of a manual toothbrush is at par with the electronic one, the lack of knowledge, technique and time required by the manual toothbrush is not something that everyone has. In such a scenario, for a quicker solution, electric toothbrushes can be the go-to option, because of how automated and efficient it is.”

Dr Bhatia recommends electronic brushes as a good alternative to your manual one! Here are 3 reasons why you can consider switching to one:

1. Can clean your teeth more thoroughly

The advanced design and technology helps the bristles rotate and move in different oscillating motions. This means the electric brush can reach places, where your manual brush can’t! With proper cleaning of the backs of molars and the gum line, the chances of cavities and gingivitis are also reduced.

A survey conducted by the American Dental Association found that more than 80% of the participants that used an electric toothbrush showed an improvement in their oral health. Studies published in the American Journal of Dentistry and the British Dental Journal also support the use of electric toothbrushes.

2. The built-in times ensures your teeth are cleaned properly

The morning rush is real! And brushing your teeth also happens in haste, leaving your teeth not as clean as they should be! You’ll be surprised to know that on an average, people just brush their teeth for 30 seconds to 1 minute, whereas the recommended time is 2 minutes, 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. A built-in timer will ensure that you are brushing your teeth long enough to clean it thoroughly.

3. It will make sure you are not hurting your gums

Bleeding gums can be a nightmare for all of us. It generally happens when you brush way too vigorously and hard. In this case, electric toothbrushes can be your saviour! And no, the movements and the vibrations won’t hurt your gums. With an electric toothbrush, you just have to hold it without any pressure, while it gently brushes your

Significant Challenges

The key factor hindering the growth of the market is the rise in product recalls related to sports medicine equipment. Impact of Covid-19 On the Global Sports Medicine Market:

COVID-19 is expected to negatively impact the market during the forecast period. The surge in cases of positive corona cases all across the world has forced the governments to impose the lockdown to restrict the virus spread. How to Tell Which Fitness Influencers Are Worth Trusting

Fitness Instagram, like every other place or population on earth, contains multitudes. There are athletes working their butts off, coaches promoting their business, models making a living. Not all of these people are legitimate fitness professionals, so if you look to Insta or YouTube for workout advice you need to ask yourself a few questions.

What is this person implying but not saying?

The number one lie of many fitness influencers is one they leave unsaid: It is the implication that whatever I am selling will get you the body you see here.

The truth is, people who make a living by being fit all got fit before they started selling workout programs or supplements. Once you have a jacked physique, you can endorse sawdust in a jar and people will connect the dots in their mind to assume that you’re selling them a muscle building supplement. If you have a lean body, you can sell a diet plan and people will assume that if they follow the plan they’ll get shredded like you.

To be totally honest for a minute: steroid use is fairly common among athletes who compete in sports that are not drug tested, or who don’t compete at all. But because it is illegal for recreational use in some places, many folks don’t want to talk about it. (There are exceptions, though: here’s a before-and-after post from sport scientist and bodybuilder Mike Israetel where he obliquely compares his “natural” years to the part of his training career that was “otherwise.”)

Don’t forget that influencers often use photo editing — with Photoshop, FaceTune, and other software — to make themselves look skinnier (or curvier) as needed. Posing to accentuate certain body parts is absolutely an art that can be taken to extraordinary lengths, as journalist Danae Mercer points out in several subversive little tutorials on her feed. Oh, and: if you’re looking at influencers selling booty workout plans, be aware that butt implants are very much a thing.

What is this person’s real area of expertise?

If somebody is selling diet plans, exercise programs, or coaching services, they should have credentials — formal or otherwise — to back them up. For example, a personal training certification from a legit organisation like ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or another accredited by NCAA is one thing to look for. Some coaches or instructors don’t have a formal credential, but can point to top athletes they’ve coached or fellow professionals who can vouch for them. These more subjective connections work best if you follow them to find the trainer or instructor in the first place: for example, if several of your favourite powerlifters are all coached by the same person, that person may be a good source of advice for you.

But remember that exercise and nutrition are not the same thing. If someone is giving advice on nutrition, check whether they are a registered dietitian or hold a similar qualification. In many places, “nutritionist” is not a legally defined

Bayer to acquire Asklepios Bio in foray into gene therapy worth up to $4 billion

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Bayer BAYGn.DE agreed to acquire unlisted U.S. biotech firm Asklepios BioPharmaceutical Inc for as much as $4 billion in a bet on gene therapy with the help of modified viruses.

FILE PHOTO: A bridge is decorated with the logo of a Bayer AG, a German pharmaceutical and chemical maker in Wuppertal, Germany August 9, 2019. REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay/File Photo

Germany’s Bayer will pay $2 billion upfront and up to an additional $2 billion in milestone payments contingent on development achievements, it said on Monday.

The North Carolina-based takeover target, also known as AskBio, is trying to use the harmless adeno-associated virus as a delivery device to bring genetic repair kits against a range of diseases into the body.Drugs and farming pesticides maker Bayer needs to upgrade its drug development pipeline amid a weaker outlook for agricultural sales and as it seeks to finalise an $11 billion settlement over claims its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer.

Among AskBio’s most advanced projects are early tests on volunteers of prospective treatments against Pompe disease – a rare genetic disease causing buildup of a sugar molecule inside cells – as well as against Parkinson’s disease and congestive heart failure.

Bayer said the deal complements the 2019 acquisition of BlueRock Therapeutics, a developer of stem cell therapies, and underscores Bayer’s intention to create a cell and gene therapy business.

AskBio, which was founded in 2001, and BlueRock will exchange information and collaborate but will each operate as independent entities, prompting a pledge from AskBio’s five main owners, who are co-founders or key scientists, to remain with the firm.

“We are staying on board because of the unique structure that Bayer has provided … We’ll have the ability to make our science decisions,” said Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Sheila Mikhail.

Investors TPG Capital and Vida Ventures are selling a minority stake in the company.

AskBio is also helping other companies with their gene therapy research and production and has licensed experimental drugs to external partners, which has financed much of its own drug development activities. Bayer or AskBio would not provide figures for such fee revenues.

A potential treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, invented by AskBio is currently being developed in clinical trials by Pfizer PFE.N and this month won fast track here status from U.S. regulators.

Bayer in 2018 moved to lean more strongly on external firms to improve drug development, which analysts say needs a boost to make up for an expected decline in revenues from its two pharma bestsellers from about 2024.

Credit Suisse was financial advisor while Baker McKenzie was legal counsel to Bayer. JP Morgan was financial advisor to AskBio, while Ropes & Gray was legal counsel.
