Cebu Institute of Medicine named no. 1 medicine school nationwide

ALTHOUGH no Cebu-based takers made it to the top 10 of the November 2020 Physician Licensure Examinations (PLE), the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) named a Cebu-based medicine school as the number one performing school this year.

The Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) took the top spot after all of its 138 first-time takers passed the examinations, giving the school a 100 percent passing rate.

The CIM was followed by the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila with a 98.63 percent passing rate and the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health with 98.60 percent.

The PRC released the results of the November 2020 PLE on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, or seven working days after the last day of the examination.

The PRC said a total of 3,538 out of the 4,704 takers passed this year’s PLE administered by the Board of Medicine in the Cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.

A UP-Manila graduate, Jomel Lapides, emerged as the top 1 with a rate of 88.67 percent, followed by Patrick Joseph Mabugat from University of Saint La Salle and Adrian Teves from University of Sto. Tomas (UST) who both garnered 88.58 percent. Henrick Fong of UST and Raphael Rodolfo of UP Manila ranked third with a rate of 88.33 percent.

Among those who passed is Janine Patricia “Tricia” Robredo, a daughter of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo.

In a Twitter post Thursday morning, Robredo said: “Our children’s achievements are always sweeter than our own. Congratulations, Trish. Thank you for making us proud many times over.”

Lapides, a graduate of UP Manila, topped the examination with a rating of 88.67 percent.

Seven other UP Manila graduates were among the 20 examinees who landed in the top 10 slots.

Only one examinee from outside Luzon made it to the top 10.

The certificate of registration and the registration for the issuance of professional ID will be done online beginning Jan. 11 to 29 next year. (WBS / Marites Villamor-Ilano / SunStar Philippines)

Michigan Medicine joins country’s top hospitals in #MaskUp campaign as COVID-19 surges nationwide

ANN ARBOR – Michigan Medicine has partnered with about 100 of the country’s top health care systems urging Americans to mask up as COVID-19 cases reach record-breaking highs.

The news comes as Michigan reached its highest-ever single-day record Friday with 9,779 new cases.

Just this past week alone, one million Americans have tested positive for the novel virus, with 11.5 million testing positive since cases emerged earlier this year. More than 250,000 Americans to date have died from the disease.

As cases surge and more people choose to gather indoors as temperatures drop, hospital leaders are worried that their facilities could reach capacity quickly and experience shortages of healthy caregivers. Over the past two weeks, more than 900 medical workers at Mayo Clinic tested positive for COVID-19. The hospital system said the infections were due mostly to community spread.

Medical experts maintain that wearing a face mask is the best way to protect yourself from contracting the virus. Masks prevent the inhalation of harmful pathogens by the wearer and prevents potential harmful particles to be exhaled by the wearer and expose others.

Ads for the new #MaskUp campaign are currently running in some of the nation’s top publications. The message reads:

“As the top nationally-ranked hospitals, we know it’s tough that we all need to do our part and keep wearing masks. But, here’s what we also know: The science has not changed. Masks slow the spread of COVID-19. So, please join us as we all embrace this simple ask: Wear. Care. Share with #MaskUp. Together, wearing is caring. And together, we are saving lives.”

The messages will also appear on social media and other digital platforms in order to reach a broader audience.

“After many months of living in social isolation and refraining from some of our favorite activities, this is not easy. We are all fatigued and stressed. However now is exactly the wrong time to let up,” Marschall S. Runge, CEO of Michigan Medicine and dean of the U-M Medical School said in a statement.

“We all must be vigilant in the behaviors that will protect us, our families, and our neighbors: wear a mask, socially distance, and practice frequent hand hygiene. These practices are our best defense against a disease that we still are trying to understand.”

At one point this week, Michigan Medicine had 75 COVID-19 positive patients at the same time, with roughly 20 of them requiring intensive care.

“Scientists and clinicians are learning more and more from this disease, and the outlook for more effective treatment and vaccination looks promising,” Laraine Washer, medical director of infection prevention and epidemiology at Michigan Medicine said in statement. “But for now, we have to use the tools that we know work: wearing masks, staying socially distant and washing hands.

“This, of course, makes the upcoming holidays a challenge. But the traditional gatherings of multiple households is a high risk situation for exposures to

AccessHope and Northwestern Medicine Announce Novel Collaboration to Expand Nationwide Access to Best-in-Class Cancer Expertise

DUARTE, Calif. & CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–On the heels of AccessHope’s national launch in October, the wholly owned subsidiary of City of Hope today announced it has joined forces with Northwestern Medicine to provide specialized cancer expertise to help more people achieve the best possible cancer outcomes. This novel collaboration brings two National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers together, enabling some of the country’s most sought-after specialists to offer expertise that can improve care, experience, outcomes and value for patients in the treatment of complex cancers.

“The NCI designation represents an elite group of cancer centers recognized for delivering high-quality clinical care, superior outcomes and outstanding patient experiences,” said AccessHope CEO Mark Stadler. “We’re honored to have Northwestern Medicine join City of Hope in the AccessHope program.”

The collaboration, which expands the current City of Hope network to now include experts from Northwestern Medicine, comes at a crucial time considering that COVID-19 has shown to have impacted cancer diagnosis, care and treatment. “COVID-19 has resulted in the number of cancer screenings and resulting diagnoses dropping significantly over the last several months,” noted Stadler. “AccessHope anticipates that as a result, cancer diagnoses may come later, when cancer has progressed or is at a more advanced stage, making it even more vital for individuals to receive an expert review of their case and start on the right course of treatment the first time.” City of Hope recognized the tremendous benefit to cancer patients of reimagining how they can receive the most innovative care available as close to home as possible. Demand from employers across the country led City of Hope to establish AccessHope. Today, AccessHope serves approximately 1.95 million members who have its cancer support services through 34 employers including 11 Fortune 500 companies.

AccessHope’s collaboration with Northwestern Medicine furthers its commitment to optimizing care for people facing cancer, regardless of their location. Through an employer health care benefit, employees of AccessHope clients who are diagnosed with cancer and their local treating oncologist can benefit from the expertise of specialists knowledgeable in the latest cancer discoveries for review of diagnosis, treatment plan and precision medicine opportunities, as well as clinical trial information and support services, without ever needing to leave their community.

“We believe access to the expertise we have at Northwestern Medicine and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University should not be limited by geography,” said Dean M. Harrison, president and chief executive officer, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “Through this collaboration, AccessHope members will benefit from the knowledge and experience of our world-class physicians and the latest in cancer research and treatment options.”

If you’ve been in the market for home gym equipment you might have noticed “out of stock” signs posted across the websites of most major retailers.

Even a quick search through popular e-commerce marketplace juggernauts Amazon and Walmart yields few results. According to market research popular overseas manufacturers in places like China still have a six-month backlog. It’s not looking good for Christmas shoppers either, unless they’re willing to pay a high premium for used products auctioned on sites like Ebay.

This COVID-19 lockdown fueled shortage has allowed one company, Ad4m Fitness to establish itself in the competitive fitness equipment industry. Ad4m LLC, aka Ad4m Fitness, is a Wyoming-based brand founded by husband, and wife team Vincent and Monika Briatore.

In just a few short months their company has reach a staggering 1.2 million a month in US sales making it the fastest growing private fitness brand startup of 2020.

The couple had the foresight to see the implications of this shortage in early 2020, and established exclusive rights with a manufacturer to produce cast iron weights, and barbells.

The company employs a warehouse in San Jose, California with others being planned here in Amarillo TX, and New York. It’s good to know that American exceptionalism, and the entrepreneur spirit is alive, and well even during these trying times. There’s always opportunity for those bold enough to venture outside the beaten path.

Million line up as Slovakia launches unique nationwide COVID-19 test

By Radovan Stoklasa

TRENCIN, Slovakia (Reuters) – Over a million Slovaks took a coronavirus swab on Saturday as the country launched a huge logistical operation to test most of its population over the weekend to reverse a rise in the pandemic.

Authorities say the ambitious plan to test most citizens aged over 10 among Slovakia’s 5.5 million people is the first of its kind in a country of its size.

It is being watched by other nations looking for ways to slow the virus spread and avoid overwhelming their health systems.

More than 40,000 medics and support teams of soldiers, police, administrative workers and volunteers staffed around 5,000 sites to administer the antigen swab tests.

As of noon (1100 GMT), 828,518 people had been tested and 7,947 were positive, Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad told a news conference.

“We have clearly got to over 1 million (as of 1500 GMT) – people’s interest continues,” Nad said, adding that over 3 million people may be tested over the course of the weekend.

Prime Minister Igor Matovic has said he hoped the plan would identify and quarantine enough infected people to avert a strict lockdown for everyone.

The testing was free and voluntary, but the government will impose lockdowns on people who do not participate, including a ban on going to work.

Martin Janosik, a 44-year-old entrepreneur, said he had taken part so his son would be allowed to attend school.

“I did not have much of a choice, but I did not think much about it,” he told Reuters at a testing centre in Trencin, a city north of the capital Bratislava.

“It is also good for me and for my company, if I am healthy I can be there and take people around.”

Slovak media reported up to four-hour queues but waiting times were getting shorter in the afternoon.

Some of the sites at schools, sports grounds, theatres, car parks and companies opened late on Saturday amid lack of staff or material, but Nad said 99% of sites were operational by early afternoon.

The antigen test gives results in just 15-30 minutes but is less accurate than the molecular PCR method.

Opponents of the scheme have pointed to a Czech study that found antigen tests identified only around 70% of infections detected by PCR tests, but the government has insisted that even at that level of accuracy the exercise is worth it.

Critics also question whether requiring people to show a negative test in order to move around freely complies with data protection rules.

A second round of testing is planned for a week’s time.

Slovakia reported 2,573 COVID-19 cases on Saturday through PCR testing, bringing the total to 57,664, with 219 deaths.

Texas seeks to shore up hospital capacity in El Paso as coronavirus cases surge nationwide

New reported infections nationwide surpassed 80,000 for the first time this Friday and again Saturday, as hospitalizations push past 40,000 and daily death tolls begin to climb. Officials are already trying to shore up overwhelmed facilities: In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Sunday announced that state authorities are creating a new site for medical care and deploying extra resources to hospitals in El Paso, where covid-19 hospitalizations have nearly quadrupled to almost 800 in less than three weeks.

The United States’ latest case spike, expected to intensify as winter draws closer, is geographically broader than the spring surge that devastated East Coast states and the summer wave that hit the South and Southwest. And it comes as leaders are leery of renewed shutdowns, as Americans grow wearier of restrictions and as the Thanksgiving travel season looms.

In previous waves, “our governments reacted,” said Megan Ranney, an emergency medicine professor at Brown University. “We closed bars. We closed restaurants. We enforced mask mandates. And I’m not seeing a lot of that nationally right now.”

“We are set up for just a perfect storm — a conflagration,” she said. “Right now, you can talk about there being lots of little burning fires across the country. And then Thanksgiving will be the wind that will whip this fire up into an absolutely human disaster for our country.”

In El Paso, authorities are urging people to stay home as efforts to add hospital beds kick in. The new facility announced by Abbott, set to open this week at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center, will start at 50 beds but can expand to 100 if necessary, the governor’s office said, while “auxiliary medical units” sent to hospitals can boost capacity by 100 beds.

In a Sunday call, Abbott also asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to ease the pressure with a Department of Defense medical center in El Paso. Abbott asked to house non-coronavirus patients in William Beaumont Army Medical Center so that hospitals in the El Paso area could give more beds to those with covid-19, the disease the novel coronavirus causes.

Health and Human Services did not immediately provide a comment.

New daily infections in El Paso have rocketed from fewer than 25,000 at the beginning of the month to more than 38,500 this weekend, according to The Washington Post’s tracking. New deaths have yet to surpass a peak in August, but deaths lag behind spikes in cases and hospitalizations.

The mayor of El Paso, Dee Margo, said he learned on a recent ride-along with fire officials that most of their calls are related to the coronavirus. If moves to address hospitals’ strain do not work, he said, he will ask the governor for more action. He pleaded with residents to mind their behavior to avoid “drastic measures.”

Some public health experts say they are not optimistic about the chances of ramping up coronavirus restrictions again across the country.

“I don’t see forceful policy intervention happening
