New program is launched for safe medicine disposal
The Medication Education & Disposal Project has launched a statewide program to offer free services to dispose of expired, unwanted and unused medicines.
Safe Medication Return is operated by MED-Project, which is the Washington State Department of Health’s approved program operator.
Drug manufacturers fund the program at no cost to taxpayers.
MED-Project provides state residents with year-round medicine drop-off locations such as at pharmacies, medical facilities and law enforcement offices. Along with existing operations in several counties, MED-Project has activated about 150 additional drop-off sites.
Residents who prefer mailing back unwanted medicine for disposal can request free prepaid and preauthorized packages. Information is at med-project.org, or people can call (844) 633-7765.
MED-Project also is launching a public awareness campaign about safe disposal of unwanted medicine. A mobile-friendly website provides drop-off location information and instructions, as well as downloadable educational materials.
“We want to encourage Washington state residents to take their medication as prescribed, store it safely and dispose of unwanted or expired medicine securely,” said Dr. Victoria Travis, MED-Project’s national program director, in a news release.
For more information about the MED-Project drug takeback program and available services in Washington state, including accepted types of medication, call (844) 633-7765 or visit the website.

Green Bay family medicine residency program launched by Prevea, MCW
GREEN BAY – The city’s first residency program for family physicians has already attracted over 150 student applicants with interviews starting this week.
That’s a good sign for organizers from a local health care system and the Medical College of Wisconsin, who say they launched the program to help solve a doctor shortage in northeastern Wisconsin.
Prevea Health/Hospital Sisters Health System has long identified residency programs as a way to address the shortage. With baby boomers aging, hospital systems nationwide had been working to prepare for a surge in demand for medical services.
“Recruitment to future positions in Green Bay is very important given the nationwide provider shortage that we’ve seen for many years and will continue to see,” said Dr. Ashok Rai, president and CEO of Prevea Health/HSHS.
Studies have shown there’s a higher likelihood that somebody will stay in the town where they completed their residency, he said.
“That’s even more likely than the town that they went to medical school in,” Rai said.

RELATED: For first time, most of my patients have same illness. You could be spreading it.
As Prevea looks for physicians, primary care is a major concern for the future, and family medicine is one of its largest specialties in primary care. Family medicine residents also have a higher likelihood of working in rural areas as well as suburban and smaller urban communities like Green Bay, Rai said.
Prevea expects residents to be prepared to work in a variety of fields and settings, including in rural clinics. Training in Green Bay also will allow residents to serve in Prevea’s clinics north of the Green Bay area.

The residency program will begin July 1, 2021 and will train four family medicine residents per year for three years. A total of 12 physicians will be trained by 2024. The program will accept applicants until Nov. 18.
The Medical College of Wisconsin is partnering with Prevea for the program. The program’s director, Dr. Manal Soliman, is associate professor of family and community medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Accreditation and hiring for the residency program happened during the pandemic, and the accreditation process had to be virtual. Rai expressed hope that residents will not need many pandemic-specific skills next July when they start practicing.
However, residents’ perspective will likely be changed because of the pandemic. He looks forward to hearing about what students have learned during the COVID-19 outbreaks and how they will apply these lessons in their residency and practice.
“It’s going to be the most unique time in modern history to train to be a physician because of the stresses, both physical and mental, but also the demonstrated resiliency of our profession,” Rai said.

Read MoreQF-sponsored report on precision medicine to be launched Sunday at WISH 2020
* WISH 2020 begins Sunday virtually
* Report to provide possible pathways for diagnosis, treatment and drug development for several diseases
A white paper on precision medicine by Economist Intelligence Unit on various pathways of diagnosis, treatment and drugs development and sponsored by Qatar Foundation (QF) will be launched Sunday during the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) 2020, Gulf Times has learnt.
The biennial WISH summit, which is being held virtually this year, begins Sunday with the participation of a large number of global healthcare experts and lasting until November 19.
“The report looks at the promise of precision medicine, what it is currently delivering and challenges associated with its wider application in large health systems. The key findings of the report provide new pathways for treatment and drugs development with potential outcomes using four interwoven, data-related enablers,” said Dr M Walid Qoronfleh, director of Research & Policy, WISH, QF’s global healthcare initiative.
Dr Qoronfleh, who was one of the international healthcare experts who provided a professional perspective to the report, explained: “The four enablers are the large volume of data available to health systems, the vast growth in the kinds of data for health systems, the increasing popularity of data storage systems, permitting easier access to relevant information, and the quantum leaps in analytic technology to get greater insights out of this information. All these provide greater ability to understand the bodies of individual humans in finer details and provide solutions using precision medicine taking into account the common characteristics.”
According to Dr Qoronfleh, “Precision medicine, or personalised medicine as it is known in some parts of the world, is healthcare customisation or tailoring, healthcare delivery in a distinctly and well-defined patient-centric way. It is a holistic approach to be more precise, predictive and personalised leading to ‘better care, better value, better health and better social outcomes’.”
The healthcare expert noted that precision medicine has the potential to transform the diagnosis and treatment of several diseases in a big way, especially various types of cancers.
“The biggest advances in precision medicine are made in cancer, rare diseases and pharmacogenomics using genomic data to indicate how a given drug will affect an individual. For cancer, in 2018 and 2019 the US Food and Drug Administration approved 103 new molecular entities, 36 of which could be described as personalised medicines. Of these, 14 are for some form of cancer. Key advances have been in biomarkers for diagnosis and immunotherapy,” he pointed out.
“Precision medicine is expected to improve healthcare in a number of different ways at the patient, health system and population health levels. At patient level, the medical approach is more precise, predictive and personalised such as avoiding harm by protecting patients from adverse effects of therapies. At the healthcare system level, evidence-based research, cost-effectiveness and efficiency and better decisions lead to better patient outcome, while at the population level it can be incorporated into health strategies or national policies, leading to improved healthcare promotion, prevention, surveillance and public

U.S. Vaccine Allocation Planner for COVID-19 Launched by Ariadne Labs and Surgo Foundation
Data-driven tool will help state and county decisionmakers operationalize phased vaccine distribution to priority populations in communities across the United States
When COVID-19 vaccines become available in the United States, there won’t be enough to vaccinate everyone right away, and states will need to allocate them to their highest priority populations. A new tool provides state and county decisionmakers the region-specific data they will need to distribute vaccines to different populations based on available vaccine doses, priority populations, and vulnerable communities.

The Vaccine Allocation Planner for COVID-19 was jointly developed by Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; and Surgo Foundation, a nonprofit focused on solving health and social problems with precision.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recently launched a set of vaccine allocation guidelines for the United States, identifying 13 high-priority populations to be vaccinated in phases:
-
Phase 1A includes high-risk workers in health facilities and first responders.
-
Phase 1B includes people with significant comorbid conditions and people living in congregate care settings.
-
Phase 2 includes critical workers in other high-risk settings (public transit, grocery stores, etc.); teachers and school staff; people with moderate comorbid conditions; all older adults; people in homeless shelters or group homes; and incarcerated people or staff who work in jails.
-
Phase 3 includes young adults; children; and the remaining critical workers.
-
Phase 4 includes anyone residing in the United States who didn’t have access to vaccines in prior phases.
The Vaccine Allocation Planner for COVID-19 helps state and county decisionmakers operationalize the NASEM guidelines, allowing users to obtain size estimates of the high-priority populations in their immediate regions and weight purely by this criteria, while also considering other factors like community vulnerability. It also helps users estimate the number of vaccine doses available; and the percentage of vaccine coverage achievable under various scenarios.
“State and local leaders are going to need to make decisions about how to distribute their allotted COVID-19 vaccine doses, and there are many permutations those decisions could take,” said Dr. Sema Sgaier, Executive Director of Surgo Foundation and adjunct assistant professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Our tool gives them the concrete, localized data they will need to estimate with precision and maximize the public health impact of the coronavirus vaccine, while at the same time prioritizing vulnerable populations.”
“In the midst of the pandemic, we will face a scarce supply of the COVID-19 vaccines. Nations, states and local municipalities are planning for effective vaccine distribution,” said Dr. Rebecca Weintraub, Director of Vaccine Delivery at Ariadne Labs and Associate Physician, Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “Unfortunately, too often scarce resources go to the most privileged. We built this tool for leaders with the data they will
