Garmin Made an ESports Fitness Smartwatch for Streamers

I hate this so much.

I hate this so much.
Image: Garmin

No one:

Absolutely no one:

Garmin: What’s up fam, it’s ya boi Garmin here with a new GPS esports smartwatch that you can use to livestream your biometric stats on Twitch or whatever it is you use to stream you crushing your opponents!

I wish I were joking, but 2020 continues to test everyone’s sanity. Garmin has actually launched the Instinct Esports Edition, a “rugged GPS smartwatch uniquely designed for esports athletes and enthusiasts to take their gaming performance to the next level.” How is that possible, you ask? Well, for starters, the watch adds an esports activity for tracking so you can monitor your heart rate and stress during a game. Garmin also developed a new PC streaming tool that’s called, sigh, STR3AMUP!, so you can create overlays that let viewers know your heart rate, stress, and “body battery” level in realtime. Did I mention this watch is also $300?

“Elite athletes around the world depend on Garmin products to monitor and improve their performance,” Garmin’s VP of Sales Dan Bartel said in the press release.

This, so far, is a true statement. The following is more dubious.

“With the Instinct Esports Edition, esports athletes can tap into that same technology to track and examine how their body responds to intense competition. Players can also use Instinct’s data to make adjustments in their daily lives, whether it be altering sleep patterns or activity levels, which can result in increased cognitive and physical performance during play.”

There is a lot to unpack there. While elite esports athletes do train, my impression is that they aren’t spending hours riding dirt bikes, running marathons with gaming keyboards strapped to their chests, or scuba diving mid-competition. I’m not saying all esports players are schlubby basement gremlins who don’t engage in any physical activity at all. There’s coverage disproving that, and sports-like training is already happening among some elite esports teams. What I’m saying is a rugged outdoors GPS smartwatch built to military-grade standards, primarily targeted at triathletes, is overkill for gamers.

The Instinct Esports Editions specs are truly bananas. This watch has a transflective screen, which is normally found in watches geared toward outdoor activity for visibility under direct sunlight. It’s also rated for 10 ATM of water resistance, or a depth of 330 feet. That is double the rating that is widely considered safe for swimming. In terms of sensors, it also sports a compass, barometric altimeter, and thermometer on top of the usual accelerometer and built-in GPS. Like I said: Overkill.

The idea of stress-tracking is kind of cool—except most stress features aren’t built for real-time monitoring. They’re more related to how much your body has physically recovered from the previous day’s activities. According to Garmin’s own website, the watch monitors stress using heart rate variability data. HRV is essentially the time in between heartbeats, and as explained by Harvard Medical School,

Everything You Need to Know About Garmin Fitness Watches

When it comes to wearables, Garmin is a go-to brand thanks to the massive selection of impressive options for all types of wearers.

Thinking about investing in a Garmin smartwatch or tracker? Here’s your buyer’s guide

Catering to both seasoned athletes looking to beat their PB, and casual trainers getting back into fitness, Garmin has covered almost all bases, building durable, accurate devices that do more than just tell the time.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of Garmin wearables: smartwatches and fitness trackers, though there’s quite a lot of overlap which makes things confusing.

For example, Garmin’s smartwatches, like the Fenix, offers more rugged durability and advanced tracking across multiple sports that come at a high price. While the Venu is much more focussed on style and image, with sleeker, wider displays for you to interact with apps or send texts.

The smartwatches also extend to the Forerunner, Swim 2, and Vivoactive, though these watches will include tracking features for specific sports or activities. You’ll also find smart features like Garmin contactless pay and access to apps like Uber in these devices.

We have also included the VivoSport and VivoSmart devices, which sit firmly in the tracker camp, with stripped back designs, smaller displays and a stricter focus on health monitoring and fitness tracking. Below, we’ve outlined the key specs to look out for, so let’s get underway.

GPS mapping

Almost all Garmin wearables will have some form of GPS tracking on them, but some will be more advanced or tailored to a specific activity. For example, the Fenix is a hiker’s dream, with the advanced GPS mapping out terrain elevation and even recommending walking routes as you explore. Others will have your standard tracking services so you can leave your phone at home and get an accurate map of where you went and how fast you were going.

Battery life

The battery life on the Garmin devices will vary depending on how often you use the GPS or music features, stretching from just a few hours’ use, all the way up to a month on some of the more premium options. Note that the VivoFit Junior 2 is the only watch with a replaceable battery that can last up to a year.

Water resistance

For the swimmers and winter athletes, a waterproof watch is a must to keep it working in all weathers. Each watch will have varying degrees of water-resistance, with some able to go diving. The models on this list range from protection against accidental water splash damage all the way up to 10ATM, letting you dive to 100m should you want to. All the models on this list will cope with rain-spatter and sweat, but you’ll need to keep an eye on the water protection if you’re taking yours into the pool.

Smartwatch notifications

Some of the devices below straddle that middle ground between smartwatch and fitness tracker and will allow you to send and receive texts and

Garmin launches smart new kids’ fitness tracker packed with fun games

Garmin has launched a new version of its kids’ fitness tracker, the VIvofit Jr 3, with a fresh look and a new set of games to make getting active more fun.

The Vivofit Jr 3 has a very different design to its predecessor, with a much larger face that measures 14.11 x 14.11mm (compared to 11 x 11mm for the Vivofit Jr 2). It can store two weeks of activity data (its predecessor could only keep four days’ worth), including not only steps, but also distance travelled.

The Vivofit Jr 3 gives kids access to all the same games as the Vivofit Jr 2, letting them play on their phones and unlock new levels by completing physical challenges.

The new watch can also store emergency contact details, so they can be accessed quickly when necessary. It’s worth noting that the Vivofit Jr 3 isn’t capable of making calls though – instead, the In Case of Emergency (ICE) widget will show the name and phone number of a parent or guardian on the watch’s screen.

Price and availability

The new watch comes in seven different designs, including Marvel heroes and Disney princesses. Like the Vivofit Jr 2, it has a replaceable rather than a rechargeable battery, which should last up to a year before it needs to be changed.

The Vivofit Jr 3 is available to pre-order now direct from Garmin for $79.99 / £79.99/ AU$149, and  It’s available for dispatch immediately in the US, and should arrive in time for Christmas in the UK and Australia (Garmin says it will be available in the fourth quarter of 2020).
