Dentist arrested for running over woman 2 wks ago | Delhi News

New Delhi: Two weeks after a 38-year-old woman was killed in a road accident in south Delhi’s Lado Sarai, a dentist with a private clinic in Saket has been arrested for allegedly mowing her down and fleeing from the spot.
The victim, who used to work with a private bank as a customer associate and lived on rent in Lado Sarai, was hit while crossing the road.
Police had received a call on November 17 about the accident at the Lado Sarai traffic signal. On reaching the spot, they found the woman, originally from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, to be critically injured. She was taken to AIIMS where she was declared brought dead.
On November 26, the victim’s brother tweeted, “I lost my sister, Archana Kushwaha, in an accident on 17th Nov at Lado Sarai Signal Delhi around 8.30PM, till now no clue about car and it’s being 10 days since accident happened (sic).” He also tagged the Prime Minister’s Office, AAP and Delhi Police.
On the day of the accident, crime and forensic teams visited the spot while the victim’s body was sent for a postmortem and her family was informed.
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Atul Thakur said a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence was registered and a hunt was launched for the accused.
“Multiple teams were formed and CCTV footage from the vicinity were scanned. Following days of surveillance, we zeroed in on a Honda City car and its driver was identified as Pankaj Sudhakar, a resident of Kalkaji Extension,” Thakur said.
The DCP said Sudhakar was driving at a high speed. The accused might have been drunk during the accident, said a source. The car has been seized.

Former Long Island firefighter Sarah Apgar develops firehose fitness tool Fitfighter, wins big on ‘Shark Tank’

PORT WASHINGTON, Long Island (WABC) — A former volunteer firefighter from Long Island just won big on ABC’s “Shark Tank” for her new fitness device, which was inspired by her time as a firefighter.

Sarah Apgar, of Port Washington, is the creator of Fitfighter and the Steel Hose.

When Apgar joined the Halesite Volunteer Fire Department in 2012, she noticed the firehouse didn’t have a structured strength training program. Apgar served as a platoon commander in Iraq with the U.S. Army, so she was familiar with regimented strength and weight training programs.

She began using firehoses around the firehouse to train her colleagues.

Throughout the next few years, Apgar began developing a fitness device based upon the firehose. She used real firehose material and filled it with recycled steel shot. She called it the Steel Hose.

The longer the hose, the heavier it is. They range in weight from 5 pounds to 50 pounds.

Local gym owners and trainers started to hear about the product.

“It started to sort of snowball and we sort of thought, wow, I think we’ve got a really special valuable tool here that has applications far reaching beyond where we started for firefighters,” she said.

In 2019, Apgar, a mother of two young girls, sold $45,000 worth of the product.

When COVID struck last spring, Apgar developed an online training platform for the Steel Hose.

In April and May, she did $40,000 in sales.

Around that time, Apgar received a phone call from producers of “Shark Tank.” They were intrigued with the product and with Apgar’s story. They invited her to appear on the show.

“It’s the dream come true, pinch-yourself-story that people describe,” she said.

The episode was filmed in August and aired November 13.

During the episode, guest Shark Daniel Lubetzky, the creator of KIND bars, bit on Apgar’s offer of $250,000 for a 15 percent stake in Fitfighter.

He offered $250,000 for a 25 percent stake.

Apgar accepted.

Since then, sales have skyrocketed for the Steel Hose and thousands of people purchased memberships to FitFighter’s online training platform. Apgar has 10 trainers. She also leads virtual classes out of her warehouse in Port Washington.

Apgar said she is on a mission to change the way people think about strength training and make them aware of the benefits it can have on people’s physical and mental health.

“I just want people to start moving and moving with weight and learning the principals of strength training,” she said.

Apgar still markets the Steel Hose to fire departments.

She said the FDNY Fire Academy has been using them for the past five years.

“I’m really proud of that. It’s very really special me,” she said.

Apgar said the majority of the production of the Steel Hose will be moving to South Carolina, but some will stay in Port Washington.

MIAMI – Registered clinical trials reached record levels in the past year, increasing the demand for people willing to participate, and Miami resident Marilyn Strauss Diaz was eager to join a COVID-19 vaccine trial underway at the University of Miami Health System.

“We can’t depend on a lab rat. We have to have human trials for there to be a successful vaccine, so we have to have humans come forward and be a part of trials,” she said.

“Before COVID, we usually would have a couple of hundred clinical trials here going at the same time at the University of Miami that are focused on a lot of different diseases. With COVID, there was a slowdown and now we’re ramping up again and starting a lot of these studies,” said Dr. Olveen Carassquillo, who is part of the research team.

“COVID has the most urgency. That’s a public health crisis so a lot of research is focused on that, but we have a lot of landmark cancer studies going on with different treatment regimens and prevention studies. We also have a lot of cardiovascular disease, a lot of other studies focused on stroke, on preventing dementia,” Carassquillo added.

And South Florida’s diverse population makes it a major focus of research efforts, something Strauss Diaz is proud to be a part of.

“At the end, it will be beneficial to so many,” she said.

Alphabet’s DeepMind AI has solved “the protein folding problem” that could aid medicine research

Computer scientists at DeepMind, a lab owned by Alphabet, Google’s parent company, have developed an AI that has made a monumental leap in solving “the protein folding problem.” This conundrum has plagued biologists for decades, and solving it can accelerate countless other studies in medicine, agriculture, and conservation, to name a few.

Proteins are crucial “macromolecules” built from strings of molecules called amino acids. These strings of molecules are built inside of each cell by reading an organism’s DNA and blocking together long chains of amino acids. Of the 20 amino acids that make up proteins, each one chosen depends on the DNA sequence being read, and each amino acid has special properties that cause the long chain of molecules to fold over itself into a very specific, highly complicated shape, which gives the protein its function.

Understanding the shape and how it relates to the function of proteins is so important because they are responsible for most biological functions in the body, including immune response, digestion, energy production, muscle contraction, blood clotting, and countless more.

The interest of many research groups revolves around synthetic proteins used in medicines. Knowing the order of amino acids in a protein is easy enough for researchers if they know the DNA sequence that is used as its template, but knowing its shape can dramatically expedite the process of determining how it will function in people, bacteria or viruses. Among other mysteries this can unravel, think of vaccine research, a topic on everyone’s mind presently.

DeepMind’s neural network can quickly and reliably determine a protein’s shape, given the string of amino acids that comprise the protein.

Scientists have been working hard to crack this nut for over 50 years. A competition called the Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction (CASP) was formed 25 years ago to bring together this research, compare results and spur on investigation.

No one has really come close to solving this problem until DeepMind came onto the scene. Tested on a variety of proteins, DeepMind’s neural network was able to accurately assume the folded structure of a protein with the precision of lab-based experiments that typically take months or years to solve.

It should be noted that experts say solving the protein folding problem speeds up just the initial stage of the long process of safely developing a medication.

This has also apparently emerged too late to affect vaccine research into the coronavirus but could be used down the line to stem future pandemics, determine whether existing medications can be used on novel infections, and research genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Dentist held for ‘running over’ woman in Saket last month

A South-Delhi based dentist has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run case last month, where he allegedly ran over a woman in Saket and fled the spot. According to police, initial investigation revealed that the man, Pankaj Sudhakar (42), was allegedly speeding at the time as he had to visit another clinic in Gurgaon and was running late. DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said he lives in Kalkaji Extension at a paying guest accommodation and works at a clinic in Saket.

A senior police officer said: “The incident took place on the night of November 17 when the woman, Archana Kushwa (38), who worked at Axis Bank in Gurgaon, was returning to her PG in Lado Sarai from UP’s Allahabad. Her elder brother, who lives in Dubai, had posted about the death on social media and requested immediate action.”

“Eyewitnesses told police that a Honda City hit the woman when she was crossing the road and fled the spot. She was left to bleed on the road. Locals rushed the woman to AIIMS, where doctors declared her dead on arrival,” said the officer.

The DCP said, “A case was registered under IPC section 279 (rash driving or riding vehicle on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence), and investigation was started.” Police scanned around 50 CCTV cameras and found footage from one camera that showed a grey Honda City in Saket around the time of the incident. “With the help of experts, police tried to ascertain the car’s registration number. They also questioned local street vendors; one of them told police he had seen the same car in Saket earlier,” the officer said.

Police zeroed in on all Honda City cars in South Delhi, and got details of the registered owners with help from the transport authority. “A team was formed to visit homes of the owners to check their vehicles. At Sudhakar’s house, it found that his car was damaged. He was questioned and arrested,” said the officer.

According to police, during questioning, the accused told them he had stopped visiting the clinic since the incident.
