Is just one breath of smoke enough to ruin your day? As soon as the person next to you lights up, the first thing to cross your mind is the unpleasant memory of your last clash with secondhand smoke and the runny nose, sneezing, and congestion that followed. For some, the reaction to cigarette smoke closely resembles an allergic reaction, which leads them to believe that they have “smoke allergies”.
There are a lot of “smoke allergy” myths that actually make it harder to properly treat your condition. This article will help you tell if determine whether you are affected by “smoke allergies” and what you can do to better protect yourself from the illnesses associated with smoke exposure.
#1 Myth: “Allergic to Smoke”
No one is really allergic to smoke. A large number of people insist that they are allergic to smoke created by cigarettes or cigars, but the truth is that they have having an allergy-like reaction due to other health conditions. Understanding exactly why you feel like you are having allergy attack when around a smoker is the key to understanding how to prevent future symptoms.
Why do I say that there is no such thing as a smoke allergy? Because technically smoke is not an allergen – but it is an irritant. This little difference explains why most people feel no relief when they take antihistamine allergy medicine after exposure to smoke. The key to avoiding the problems caused by cigarette smoke is determining what type of sensitivity you have and how best to treat it.
Who is Prone to “Smoke Allergies”?
Sometimes people who are sensitive to tobacco smoke will also experience allergy-like symptoms when they encounter strong odors, perfumes, weather changes or temperature changes.
Symptoms of Cigarette Sensitivity
For some people, exposure to tobacco smoke can cause a list of symptoms:
These symptoms appear shortly after exposure to cigarette smoke and last for hours afterward. In addition to these symptoms, people who are in smoky environments on a daily basis are more likely to experience constant respiratory infections like sinusitis and bronchitis as well as the development of wheezing and asthma.
Tobacco Smoke Exposure
A lit cigarette is capable of releasing over 4,000 different chemicals into the air (80 of these are known or suspected carcinogens). Sometimes avoiding situations where people are smoking is almost impossible. Often a family member will smoke indoors, or a public place like a bar or restaurant will allow smoking. Depending on the severity of your reaction, just the smell of smoke on someone’s clothing or in a room where someone had smoked can cause irritation. So, even though avoidance of tobacco smoke is the best method to prevent “smoke allergies”, it may not be a practical solution.
Anyone that participates in athletic activities knows that there are some items you need to have in your athletic bag. Regardless of what age you are, a muscle sprain, strain or contusion can happen. There’s nothing worse than having a muscle injury in a tightly contested game or match. Unfortunately it will happen and you have to be prepared. When you are competing you never know what or when some nagging injury will occur. The important thing is that you have it when you need it. Almost none of the competitors I know desire to quit unless the injury is severe I’m sure you’ll agree the following 5 kinds of products really are essential for any serious athlete:
I. Before Competition:
My personal favorite pre-sports treatment for muscle aches and pain (especially lower back pain) is a product called ThermoDerm. Most will recall the “atomic balm” most trainers utilized to treat deep muscle injuries. It was a thick, gooey substance that stunk up the locker room and anything it touched. The good thing about “atomic balm” was that it lasted a long time. The advantage of ThermoDerm is that is simple to apply and is a deep penetrating lotion that warms the muscles for a long period of time. Most typical “drug store” products I’ve tried work for less than an hour. Thermoderm still works after 2 hours. It has very little scent and washes off easily. Thermoderm is very useful for me and I highly recommend it.
II.After a Muscle or Joint Injury:
The muscle pain reliever I’ve used most after a muscle injury occurs is the popular product BioFreeze. I apply BioFreeze on the injured area and wrap it (if at all possible) with an elastic wrap to compress the injured muscle tissue. BioFreeze is also quite effective for the treatment of joint pain, tendinitis, bursitis and arthritis. The cooling effect of BioFreeze helps relieve the pain so you can finish your sporting event. Biofreeze also has very little odor and is also simple to wash off. Biofreeze is available in several different easy to apply containers. Another product I use for minor joint pain is Mueller coolant spray. It provides an immediate cooling effect to ease soreness. The benefit to this product is the fact that it works immediately and easily sprays on the injured area. The disadvantage is that it won’t last long or penetrate as deep as BioFreeze. I use the Mueller coolant spray primarily for golf and always carry it inside my golf bag.
III. Tape and Wraps:
The product I’ve used quite often for different applications has been the great old ace bandage that you can get at any drug store. I like the 4 inch width the best because it can cover more area with less sliding around like smaller size do. The newer versions use Velcro at the end of the wrap so you don’t have to use those old pointy clips that scratch your skin.
The newest product is …
Alternative medicine is kind of an umbrella title for a number of different health or healing philosophies and approaches to medicine, health and healing. Included in alternative medicine are homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and natural remedies.
Many diseases and health conditions (i.e., emphysema, COPD, arthritis, cancer) have actually been beaten by alternative medicine and natural remedies. However, mainstream medicine has for years tended to not acknowledge these countless successes, apparently because they go against its established philosophies, methodologies, and are generally far less profitable than their mainstream treatments.
From our research and that of many highly qualified sources, many safe and effective alternative treatments and remedies have been ignored or even scoffed at for years by mainstream medical authorities and professionals. Mainstream medicine has called some alternative treatments as “unsafe,” “unproven”, etc. However, consider how many once “approved” mainstream pharmaceutical drugs, prescribed to millions of patients, have been recalled due to harm or death to patients? Consider the numerous potential side effects they list in their ads for their drugs still on the market. (Talk about “unsafe”! Yet, they can label alternative medicine and natural remedies “unsafe”?!)
Alternative medical, health and healing “testimonials” have also often been called “anecdotes” or “anecdotal evidence;” sometimes, as in a court room, such can be called “hearsay.” Some anecdotal evidence does not qualify as scientific evidence because its nature prevents it from being investigated using the scientific method. We’re not discounting the scientific method at all; it certainly has its place, and it is one of the single greatest strategies and reasons for humanity’s greatest advances in science, technology and medicine in the last two centuries.
There is truly “hearsay” and there is “anecdotal evidence.” Applying these labels too broadly, however, can shade or hide the reality of truly valuable and valid research and results. This terminology or labeling can be accurate (i.e., illogical conclusions), desirable and necessary in many situations. “Goat yogurt mixed with bananas and peanuts prolongs life. I heard of a man who ate this almost every day of his life, and he lived to be 112.” This would be a simplistic example of hearsay or anecdotal evidence; the conclusion is unreliable and does not follow the evidence. Such cases may hold some truth, but, by their nature, using the scientific method is not possible.
However, with many successful alternative treatments and natural remedies, we are suggesting that there is often a much higher level of correlation linking them to health or healing, even though the scientific method may not be applicable. (Mainstream medical authorities have in the past tended to discount claims or research that wasn’t conducted with the scientific methodology). (Many celebrities, professional athletes, politicians, and other wealthy people are seekers and strong supporters of alternative medicine, natural remedies, etc. Such high performance people need, want and demand high performance supplements, practices and treatments for their minds and bodies. Why shouldn’t you and your family have the same? )
Objectivity is foundational to the scientific method; however, …
In any type of strength training for soccer players, building a solid foundation from the ground up is imperative. Exercises that have a player sitting on a seat and extending their leg or lying on their stomach and curling their hamstrings are with out both functional and preventative value.
Unfortunately there are still misinformed coaches giving the wrong information about soccer fitness and building leg strength. In particular the leg extension exercise is given to improve kicking strength.
Here are three reasons why leg extensions and hamstring curls are poor choices for building leg strength.
1) The game of soccer is mostly played on one leg while either foot is in contact with the ground. Neither the leg extension or hamstring exercise provides this opportunity. When in a game does a soccer player lie on the ground and bring his/ her buttocks to the ground or sit on the turf and straighten his /her leg? These exercises isolate either the quadriceps muscle group or the hamstring muscle group and places unwanted tension at the hip.
2) Sitting or lying on either of these machines minimizes avoids the integration of the deep abdominal core muscles as well as the buttock muscles. As you know a strong “core” and strong buttocks leads to strength and power in the lower body.
3) The ligaments that support the knee either get stressed inappropriately (too much stress on the ACL) or not at all. Remember these exercises were designed for body builders to isolate these muscles. These guys and girls do a lot of posing and do not have to stop, start and change direction.
Here are three exercises to build leg strength to run faster and kick harder:
1) Any form of the single leg squat. This exercise may be done several different ways. You may squat with the air borne leg either in front or behind you.
2) Moving kicking action with resistance. Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Place a band above or below the knee of the kicking leg. Make sure the band is anchored behind you. Now take one step forward with the plant leg then follow through with the in a kicking motion with the other leg. This exercise stresses both the kicking leg for resistance and the plant leg for single leg strength and balance.
This type of exercise closely relates to the kicking action in a soccer game.
3) Stability Ball Curl. Lie on your back and place your heels on the stability ball. Raise your hip in the air then curl the ball towards you and away from you. Keep your buttocks tight. This combines the stomach core muscles and the buttocks muscles along with your hamstring muscles.
Keep in mind a couple of things about these exercises;
A) They include the both the abdominal and buttock muscles.
B) The actions closely relate to the movements in a soccer game.
C) They protect the knee joint.
So there you have it. Be well informed before …
There is the underlying assumption that modernity translates into better health. A corollary of this logic is that we can live our lives pretty much as we want because we can always buy a repair. You know, the car won’t start, the TV is broken, the telephone is dead – no problem. Just call in an expert, spend some money and all is well.
People carry this over to their thinking about health. Our ticker falters, joints creak or an unwanted growth pops up – no problem. Buy some modern medical care. If that doesn’t work, it’s a problem of money, better insurance, more hospital funding, more research for the “cure,” more doctors, better equipment and more technology. Right?
Don’t take my word for it. Listen to the perpetrators themselves. The following is taken right from the pages of the Journal of the American Medical Association (July 26, 2000): “Of 13 countries in a recent (health) comparison, the United States (the most modern and advanced in the world) ranks an average of 12th (second from the bottom)…”
For example, the U.S. ranks:
· last for low birth weight
· last for neonatal and infant mortality overall
· 11th for post neonatal mortality
· last for years of potential life lost
· 11th for female life expectancy at one year, and next to last for males
· 10th for age adjusted mortality
The World Health Organization, using different indicators, ranked the U.S. 15th among 25 industrialized nations. (If ranked against “primitive” cultures eating and living as humans were designed, the whole industrialized world would be at the bottom of the heap.)
Some might say these dismal results are because of smoking, alcohol, cholesterol, animal fats and poor penetration of medical care. Not so. Countries where these health risks are greater have better overall health according to epidemiological studies. It’s also not due to lack of technology. The U.S. is, for example, second only to Japan in the number of magnetic resonance imaging units (MRIs) and computed tomography scanners per unit of population. Neither can lack of medical personnel be blamed since the U.S. has the greatest number of employees per hospital bed in the world.
So what is the problem? Here are some clues as revealed in the same journal cited above:
· 12,000 deaths per year from unnecessary surgery
· 7,000 deaths per year from medication errors in hospitals
· 20,000 deaths per year from other hospital errors
· 80,000 deaths per year from nosocomial (originating in a hospital) infections
· 106,000 deaths per year from adverse effects of medications
That totals 225,000 deaths per year, the third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer. Another study – we’re talking just hospital related deaths here – estimates 284,000 deaths per year. An analysis of outpatient care jumps these figures by 199,000 deaths for a new total of 483,000 medically related deaths per year. And this assumes doctors and hospitals eagerly report all their mistakes. Think so?

Health is not only the absence of disease it has various aspects. Believe it or not this gym was created by a group of friends who were drinking a bottle of tequila one night after their gym had gone under. The group was trying to decide on what to do next, after a few shots someone had the idea of “creating a gym for everyone”, A sort of “judgement free” zone where this is the creed that Planet Fitness lives by.
Planet fitness offers all of the great amenities of a large gym without the large monthly bill. Each gym is stocked full of plenty of cardio equipment, free weights, and various other exercise equipment. Many gyms have tanning booths that offer guests the option to add the privilege to use them at an extra monthly fee.
The main selling point to planet fitness is this “judgement free” zone everyone who joins this gym will feel comfortable whether you are a first time gym user or an expert with exercising. Planet Fitness is one of the only gyms that offers personal trainers at absolutely no cost for as long as you need. These trainers will help you set up an exercise program to follow and will guide you on the proper technique for each exercise.
Although this is the judgement free zone there are some things that guests may find to be judgmental. The first is there is one golden rule that each guest must follow, no grunting or no dropping weights. This could be a turn off for many who are serious body builders who like tossing weights around the gym. Another issue is that many of the free weights only go up to a certain limit, since Planet Fitness is geared towards women many of the equipment is geared towards them.
Overall the judgement free zone is a great value for the money, with plans starting at as low as $10 a month with usually a $39 down payment Planet Fitness provides one of the best workout environments for the monthly fee.…
There’s no denying that the fitness cross trainer is the hottest selling piece of exercise equipment on the market today. With their busy, modern lifestyles, most people don’t have the time to travel to a gym to work out. Recognising that staying fit is important, many have elected to work out at home, in private and at their own pace. These machines are a good choice for these people, because they provide a total body workout that maximises the time spent working out. Here’s a brief review of one we like quite a bit: the Vision Fitness Elite X6100 HR
4.5 out of 5.0 stars
The X6100 is a terrific value in a full-featured elliptical. With a durable, heavy-duty ECB-Plus™ motor-operated resistance system that delivers smooth, fluid operation and changes on demand with just the push of a button. We also like the easy to read, backlit blue LCD console that includes 5 programmes along with a scrolling message centre. This is a great elliptical for those who have limited space because the arms fold conveniently for easy storage.
Price: About £799.00
The Vision Fitness Elite X61 HR trainer has all the features you’d expect on a much more expensive machine. It provides plenty of feedback during your workout, including displaying heart rate, watts, time, speed, distance, RPM, calories, programme, level and profile. Watts, by the way, is a measure of power that helps you know how hard you’re working. It indicates the amount of energy you’re burning over time during your workout. For example, you’re exercising at a rate of 42 watts for 100 seconds, you’ve expended one calorie. A recent review in Health magazine raved:
This elliptical trainer is made of heavy-gauge steel and folds to less than 4 feet long, making it a nice fit for nearly any room…This is a solid, smooth, quiet unit. The simple-to-decipher console offers five program options…and three other types of workout feedback. The X6100 also has hand grips that detect your heart rate on contact and a reading rack in case you need a distraction.

Many men are avid fans of nude sunbathing, taking pains to ensure proper penis health by keeping the organ covered in a good, effective sunscreen. The pleasures of nude sunbathing are many, and as long as appropriate penis care is practiced, it can add an extra element of fun and freedom to one’s beach or backyard experience. And interestingly, there may be a testosterone benefit associated with tanning in the nude as well.
Testosterone, of course, is the male sex hormone and something about which men often have concerns. While few men ever actually know what their exact testosterone levels are, most men want to make sure that they are on the high side.
That’s understandable. In popular culture, high testosterone levels are associated with true manliness: a hairy chest, bulging muscles, a sperm-filled sack and a massive penis always standing erect and ready for action. While the truth is that there is not quite such a direct link between the hormone and these attributes, testosterone nevertheless plays an important role in both physical development and sexual issues, including the sex drive.
Sunlight is of great importance to the continued health of any individual, male or female. In men, sunlight can play a role in increasing the amount of testosterone produced by the body. This is one of the reasons that ancient Greeks used to exercise outdoors in the sun. While an indoor gymnasium has its advantages, the lack of sunlight is a definite detriment.
When bare skin is exposed to sunlight, there is a definite increase in testosterone production. One study found that exposure to sunlight on the back increased testosterone production by about 120%.
Even more impressive, exposure of the genitals to sunlight increased testosterone by 200%. (That might be one reason so many erections pop up on a nude beach – that and the presence of shapely nude women, of course.)
Add in some exercise
If a guy really wants to get the testosterone levels climbing, he should consider combining exercise with his nude sunbathing. Vigorous exercise also stimulates the process by which testosterone is produced, so engaging in a naked workout outdoors should have even more of a benefit.
One can bring weights to the beach if one wants, but it may be easier to just engage in more sports-like activities. A game of nude volleyball or bare basketball can get the job done and be much more enjoyable. (But do remember, men: you’re playing without an athletic supporter, so be careful.)
Another activity that can be entertaining is nude yoga. This has become more and more common in recent years. It’s worth investigating if any practitioners are in one’s area and if there is a clothing-optional outdoor space where a class could be held.
Remember, the direct exposure of the penis to sunlight results in the testosterone boost. This means that a man needs to go the full Monty to derive the maximum benefit. This also means that a man needs …
