Named for President James Monroe, Monroe County, Pennsylvania is located in northeastern Pennsylvania along the New Jersey border. In 2000, the county had a population just over 138,000. Its county seat is Stroudsburg, home to East Stroudsburg University. In addition to enjoying a rich cultural heritage, Monroe County also attracts visitors to the area with the Pennsylvania portion of Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, the Sullivan Trail, Pocono Raceway and several popular ski resorts.
