Created from parts of two other Pennsylvania counties, Carbon County was founded in 1843. Carbon County is located 90 miles west of New York City and 90 miles northeast of Philadelphia. The northern and eastern portions of the county are part of the Poconos Mountains. With the completion of new transportation routes, the area has grown in recent years. Carbon County consists of 23 municipalities, five school districts and a county-wide technical school. Covering 500 square miles of scenic mountains and rivers, the county’s beautiful rural landscape attracts visitors, businesses and families to the area.
