Watching someone who is absorbed in the art of scrapbooking, the observer gets a feeling that there is more taking place than participation in a hobby. Immersed in photographs and memorabilia, the hobbyist appears to rise above the current stress of life as the task provides a mental break from the demands of the day. Shared with loved ones or friends, scrapbooking is also an avenue for spending quality time together while sharing ideas behind a single purpose.
But don’t just accept the words of an insider. Indeed the Craft and Hobby Association emphasizes the “therapeutic benefits” of this particular hobby. According to estimates by the association, people in 35 percent of U.S. households both enjoy scrapbooking a regular basis and enjoy the therapetuic rewards. In addition, there is a benefit that should not be overlooked: The pride in a finished product, or the complete scrapbook itself.
The benefits of scrapbooking have long been embraced by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which launched a therapeutic scrapbooking program for parents 10 years ago. Now a study published in the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology, which analyzed the influence of the scrapbooking sessions, found that they promote hopefulness and help parents expand their support network. The study highlights a previously unknown benefit of scrapbooking.
“Even though the craft of scrapbooking is widespread, its use as a tool for mental health professionals is just developing,” stated Paul McCarthy, a St. Jude social worker. “I hope our experience at St. Jude encourages others to try it in diverse settings with a variety of different groups, both young and old.”
Plainly, the association and St. Jude are convinced of the lifetime benefits of scrapbooking. While there are most likely too many to list all of them, these benefits usually fall into one of five areas.
The first is the benefit of giving, or the joy one feels when one creates a unique piece that requires great thought and the sharing of memories.
The next is the recording of events for people in the past, and future, to remember important occasions and life events that help to define individuals and families in unique ways.
The quiet and reflective mindset that accompanies scrapbooking is a third benefit. In a culture where medication is often a first resort for addressing anxiety, scrapbooking provides a meaningful and soothing break from the stresses of life.
The benefit of normalizing traumatic events, such as divorce, illness and death by putting memories in a cohesive yet expressive order, is a fourth benefit. In this way, scrapbooking promotes not just self-expression, but self-healing and a sense of inner peace, as the people at St. Jude have discovered.
In conclusion, there is the benefit of self-worth in putting the finishing touches on a signature project, which, like the human being who created it, is an inimitable creation. And this benefit, as any seasoned scrapbooker will confirm, is one of the greatest benefits of all: It is a fun, rewarding hobby that provides hours of enjoyment …
Compared to other kinds of pillows, microbead pillows offer the best health benefits for those who use them. These pillows surpass down pillows and memory foam in terms of comfort and hypoallergenic properties. Because they naturally do not absorb water or moisture, these pillows inhibit the growth of dust mites, bacteria and fungus. One who suffers from mild to severe allergies would be best off with these pillows.
However, it is not only the hypoallergenic properties that make these pillows the best choice for any health conscious person. Microbeads also offer incredible head and neck support. Like memory foam, the many microbeads in these pillows help to conform to the shape of the person’s head and position that they are sleeping in. However, unlike memory foam, these pillows have the ability constantly morph and change with the sleeper in order to conform to each and every one of their sleeping positions. Most people do not stay in one position when they sleep, and neither should a pillow. These pillows are softer and offer more cushion than other pillows, which keeps a person’s neck perfectly straight with the rest of their body. People with neck and back problems have often reported a significant improvement with their conditions. These pillows have also been offered in hospitals more recently to help with comfort for those who have recently undergone surgeries.
Pressure management is also key with sleeping comfort, and microbead pillows also offer the best environment for this. With millions of tiny polystyrene microbeads, a perfect and evenly soft sleeping surface is created in which no pressure points are agitated, leaving its user never waking up stiff or sore with red creases on their face. The millions of microbeads not only assist with pressure problems but also create a slight massaging effect to the user’s head and neck. Also, unlike down pillows, microbead pillows help with heat retention problems. Down pillows often tend to absorb heat from the sleeper which can lead to discomfort. Microbead pillows offer clean and even airflow throughout the pillow so heat can dissipate quicker, allowing its user a much cooler, more pleasurable sleeping experience.
Due to their amazing comfort, massaging effects, and their soft and gentle feel, microbead pillows are also great for people who suffer from insomnia. With the multitude of health and comfort benefits, people are choosing to go with the soothing feeling of microbead pillows more than ever.…
Dental care treatment has become an absolute necessity for millions of people worldwide; In spite of improvements and advances in dental care and health, people are afflicted by gum disease and tooth decay. Till a few decades ago, bridges and fixing dentures were two main options for treating people with missing, broken or in situations where teeth have to be surgically removed.
Modern day dental care includes dental implants that are replacement teeth roots. An implant can support one or more artificial teeth; The implant is a screw made of titanium that is fixed into the jawbone in place of a tooth root when it fails. They provide a strong foundation or base on which removable or permanent teeth can be fixed to match existing natural teeth.
There are many advantages to dental implants, some of which are:
• Greater comfort – dental implants can help avoid discomfort of fixing and removing dentures.
• Ease of chewing and eating food – dentures do not always fit 100%; With use they become less fitting and chances of slipping out while chewing food are high. With dental implants, this problem is eliminated.
• Better oral health – dental implants do not require other teeth to be modified or adjusted so ensuring that more natural teeth are left unharmed thereby improving dental health and hygiene in the long-term.
• Improvement in appearance – since dental implants are so designed that they fuse with the jawbone; They become permanent and feel like natural teeth.
• Speech improvement – unlike slurring or mumbling sometimes caused by dentures, implants do not slip ensuring better speech and communication.
• More confidence and self esteem – a good smile brings back confidence and a spring in the step.
• Convenience – dentures have to be removed and cleaned everyday; With dental implants this is not necessary at all.
• Durability – dental plates can last a lifetime with proper care and regular dental check-up.
Most dental implants can be safely done in the dentist's office under local anesthesia. A slightly more complicated procedure may require hospitalization and intravenous sedation. Every dental implant procedure is different because it involves the patient's preference, the experience of the dental surgeon and the overall need of the situation.
The procedure usually necessitates a three-step process because each stage requires time to heal.
This involves placing the dental plate flush into the gum, burying it like the root of a tooth would be. This is to give time for healing and to protect the implant from force. Once the healing period is over, the dental implant is exposed by surgically removing some of the gum covering it. This integration process is known as 'osseointegrate'.
In this step, the dental surgeon examines the implant to see if it has integrated successfully into the gum and places a post or 'abutment' which is drilled through the gum. As the area around the gum heals it forms a collar which …
When looking for a cheaper health insurance plan, a basic understanding of thewriting process of an insurance company may become invaluable. The possibility of provision and the coverage cost under consideration will be determined by the underwriting.
The underwriting procedure differences for health insurance of an individual and family or group. The underwriter keeps in mind the possible risks and dangers that the insurance company may be carrying by providing such policy while evaluating the cost of an individual health plan. The age of person, his lifestyle, the health status of the person, and the previous ailments and medical history are the factors that affect the estimation of risks or dangers. The underwriter can not separately judge each individual in a group but instead, the underwriter will consider the risks of the company before when insuring the group. This is done by providing insurance to groups that are similar. If you will try to observe and come up with a conclusion, you can say that having insurance for health in a group is cheaper than having it as an individual. Although they are in a group, the price of the premiums to be paid will still depend on the age and the health of each person and that will determine certain additions or exclusions for each individual cost.
All you have to do when applying for health insurance is to provide your basic information which includes your lifestyle and general health. You will undergo questions and even interviews and you must expect some questions that concerns smoking, previous sickness and treatments, exercise, and so on. …
There have been many changes in fitness over the past 30 years. It’s human nature to reminisce about times past. That’s great but lets not forget that things change as well. This is certainly true in the area of health and fitness. “If you do what you have always done, you will get the results you have always gotten” is true, but what if the situation changes? Then what used to work is no longer a viable and effect way to get the results that we want. In this article I will outline seven items that have changed over the past 30 or so years that affect the way we view health, fitness, exercise and what is considered “best”. Let’s look at some of these changes in Fitness.
1. Activity level
This change in fitness is pretty obvious. We just don’t move around as much as we used to 30 years ago.
Currently, the average sedentary person living in an urban setting takes 900-3000 steps a day. Uh… that’s a puny number! In the journal of sports medicine existing literature was pulled together to set a general guideline of what a good number of steps per day would be
The author Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke translated different physical activity into steps-per-day equivalents. A rate of fewer than 5,000 is classified as sedentary, 5,000 to 7,499 is low active, 7,500 to 9,999 is somewhat active 10,000 or more is active and 12,500 or more is very active. So what does 900 make us? Close to dead! But its not hard to imagine. Get up from, take elevator to car park, drive car, take elevator to office, sit down, order fast food, reverse the process to go home and go back to bed. Just to note, 1km is about 1300 steps.
Its gotten to the point where we have to purposely inconvenience ourselves to get our activity level up. Here are some suggestions (that actually show us how pathetic our average activity levels have become).
Park at the far end of the car park and walk to your building Instead of dropping the kids off in front of the school, park a couple of streets before it and walk them the rest of the way… 10,000 is actually considered a LOW estimate for children.
Go round the shopping centre or supermarket in a random. With today’s super malls, this is a big thing!
Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator (well if you work on the 50th floor, maybe climb halfway to start)
Give the dog an extra 5 minutes on his walk (we need it even more than him)
Stop emailing colleagues in the same office, instead go over and talk to them (shockingly effective considering how much email we send each day!… great for team building as well)
Go for a walk during your lunch break, walk to get your lunch or to find somewhere to eat your lunch
Get up and do something, run up and down the …
The way most people ask about how much dental implants cost sound very much the way they would ask how much a car costs and with good reason. As with cars, the cost of which will depend on what type and model of car you require, the cost you pay for implants depends on how many implants you need and why you need them.
On a good day, patients can expect to pay anywhere between the amounts of $1,200 to $3,000, not including any of the fixtures above it or anything else to hold your teeth in. If you’re going to pay for the implant, the piece that goes into it, the crown on top of that and grafting materials, this could set you back about $3,500 to $4,000 for that type of implant. OK, so it is actually closer to purchasing a new car but the thing is, dental implants last longer and well, even if you have the flashiest car around, if you mumble or slur your words because of ill-fitting dentures or bridges, then the car may actually be a better investment.
The good news is, you can actually find dental implants that won’t break the bank. Dental implants that are affordable don’t easily come by but with a lot of patience you may be able to find one at about half of the total cost and maybe even ones for free. All you need to know is where to look.
The first thing you need to do is discuss your options with your dentist. He or she may be able to come up with affordable payment plans or allow you to pay for your implants in installments. He or she may even suggest that you get dental discount cards that they participate in, ones that offer at least 30%-50% on dental procedures and are usually valid for a year.
Another way to afford your dental implants is to shop around for dental insurance policies that cover a substantial part, if not the full price for dental implant procedures. While most dental insurance policies won’t cover dental implants because it is considered cosmetic procedure, it is better to have at least a part of it covered than having to pay for it all when your budget clearly doesn’t allow it even if you need it.
You can also try to browse for cosmetic dental clinics online that offer payment plans for their patients to get dental implants. Find sites that accept Hicaps and most reputable health cards, as well as credit through any financing institutions. Sites that allow you extended payment options ensures you get the treatment when you want it and when you need it without worrying about how to pay for it.
It is also recommended that you take advantage of your benefits package at work if you have any. Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) allow you to contribute money from every pay period before they are taxed, and this is the same money you can …

Malic acid is both developed and then consumed in significant quantities by your dog’s body daily. It is needed on a constant basis because it is a critical part of the Krebs cycle. This is the process in which the body uses biochemical processes to produce water and energy. The British biochemist Sir Hans Krebs won the Nobel Prize for physiology in 1953 for identifying this process which literally keeps your dog functionally daily with energy and good dog health. Malic acid is also a natural substance found in fruit and vegetables – one of the richest sources being apples. Thus it was given the name malic which according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is derived from the French acide malique and Latin malum for apple. It is also found in cranberries, pineapple, apricot, and strawberries.
All these fruits can be fed to your dog but be careful with apples in that you only feed the “meat” of the apple and not the stem, core, or seeds since they contain small amounts of cyanide. It was first discovered in 1785 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele. This distinguished natural scientist and co-founder of modern chemistry who is best recognized for his discovery of oxygen in our air also discovered other significant substances such as chlorine, glycerin, manganese, lactic acid, and tartaric acid.
In addition to the significant benefits of transforming proteins, fat and carbohydrates into water and energy, malic acid offers many other benefits for proper dog health. It helps keep muscles and the heart from experiencing fatigue and weakness, it enhances the immune systems, it is an active chelation agent of toxic heavy metals, and it is very effective in maintaining healthy dog teeth and oral health.
As a chelation agent malic acid supports proper dog health by reacting with both good minerals and harmful heavy metal toxins in the body. With the good minerals it disrupts the chemical bonds of original inorganic compounds creating malates which in turn promote efficient absorption of the mineral. With harmful heavy metal toxins such as aluminum, lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic it is able to combine with them making them inactive which allows them to be excreted from your dog’s body via the kidneys and liver. This greatly reduces the risk of liver disease and nervous system disorders in your dog.
One of the most effective uses of malic acid for maintaining proper dog health is in the area of oral hygiene. First for treating dog bad breath it acts as both an antiseptic and stimulates the creation of excess saliva in the mouth. This combination significantly reduces the amount of bacteria and infection in the mouth which is the number one cause of dog bad breath. This is why malic acid is often used in toothpastes and mouthwashes. Then just as your dentist uses malic acid to clean teeth before adding fillings and to whiten teeth you can use it for cleaning dog teeth. The best product for cleaning dog teeth the natural way …
Chicken is an excellent source of protein and contains less fat than most meats, especially the breast which contains half the fat of a steak. Chicken is a good source of niacin, which possesses cancer fighting properties as well as the trace mineral selenium.
It is also a good source of vitamin B6, which in conjunction with niacin, is good for energy production by helping the body’s conversion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into usable energy, as well as good cardiovascular health.
Onion and garlic
Onion and garlic are frequently used in curry recipes and both have protective effects – onion has been shown to protect against stomach and colon cancers for instance and garlic is well known for its anti-fungal and antibiotic properties. When cooked it is less powerful, but supposedly is good for the cardiovascular system.
Onion has also been used for centuries to treat coughs, colds and asthma as well as angina, bacterial infections, and breathing problems, while The World Health Organization recommends the use of onions for the treatment of poor appetite and to prevent arteriosclerosis.
While many people associate spices with the strong flavours of Indian food, they forget that like all foodstuffs they can provide important nutritional value.
For example both Ginger and turmeric appear to have an anti-inflammatory effect making them suitable for the treatment of arthritis. Unsurprisingly ginger does contain chemicals similar to those found in conventional anti-inflammatory medications, although it also acts to thin the blood, while turmeric seems to suppress the chemicals responsible for causing inflammation.
Cinnamon has also been identified as being important in the inflammatory response and a small amount taken every day will help lower the risk of factors leading to type 2 diabetes and heart disease by as much as 10 to 30 percent, although the jury is still out on cinnamon’s anti-bacterial properties.
As well as its anti-inflammatory properties, one component of ginger, known as gingerol, has been shown to reduce the effects of nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness as well as possessing cancer-fighting attributes.
And cayenne pepper, responsible for much of the heat of a curry, has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties too – it seems to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease and may be useful as an analgesic too.…
The effects of good nutrition on the body are as visible as the effects of bad nutrition on the body. The difference is that bad nutrition can destroy the body, while good nutrition only supports and builds up the body. Here, the better goal in life is to maintain a lifestyle that promotes good nutrition. This will cause many positive effects, including the following 5 effects of good nutrition.
5 Effects of Good Nutrition:

This includes better learning, proper balance and pH in the body tissues, to stabilize and regulate body systems like blood pressure, rebuild tissues, and maintain proper blood sugar levels
2. Maintain healthy weight
This includes proper blood pressures, less likely to allow diseases like Diabetes, heart malfunctions
3. Prevent disease
This includes prevention of cancer, tissue disease, parasitical invasions, bacterial infections

One key to getting good nutrition regularly is to avoid excess. Balance food intake between the major groups, and eat specific amounts. You need a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients. A multi vitamin may be helpful if you are not sure about your food intake but it is not a substitution for eating properly. Water is essential to body functioning, moving nutrients into cells, and handling waste disposal.
You can obtain and follow the standard daily food pyramid and recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) put out by the government. It is adjusted according to age due dietary needs change as a person ages.
This pyramid is composed of nutritional groups of: calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and includes lists of antioxidants and herbs that are beneficial to health.
Beside age, the body's nutritional needs change with use of drugs, or disorders and diseases that affect the body's ability to meet those needs, or interfere with absorption or intake of food nutrients.
There are more than the above 5 effects of good nutrition, but these are a long way to getting you started in a healthy lifestyle if you pay attention. By the way, if you cant pay attention, you may need better nutrition! Avoid excess sweets and highly refined food, because they can cause bacterial excesses that can even have a lethal result if left unchecked (Candida). By providing the proper fuel (food) to your body, you enable it to function at its optimum capacity, keeping you healthy, happy, and fit for years and years, with benefits extending even to the next generation. …
